Young Leslie Van Houten had a promising career ahead of her. She was the homecoming princess at 19 years old and seemed destined for great things.

This is why the public was stunned by her conviction in 1971 for her part in the 1969 murders of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. She admitted to stabbing Rosemary more than a dozen times while confessing to the murders, for which she was serving a life term.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation revealed to the public this week that Van Houten had been released from the facility where she had been serving her term.

Van Houten who is now 73 years old, “was released to parole supervision.” Her attorney, Nancy Tetreault, confirmed that Van Houten was released early morning on Tuesday, 11th July, 2023, and driven to a transitional housing facility.

“She’s still trying to get used to the idea that this real,” Tetreault shared, adding that Van Houten would likely spend a year in a halfway house. “She has to learn to use the internet. She has to learn to buy things without cash. It’s a very different world than when she went in.”

While incarcerated, Van Houten completed both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in counseling. She will probably remain on parole for three years, according to her lawyer Tetreault, who expressed the hope that Van Houten will quickly get a job.

Van Houten has frequently expressed her regret for what occurred and her part in it.

She laments allowing Manson’s ideas to shape her and her “individual thinking”.

“I bought into it lock, stock and barrel,” she said of accepting his beliefs during a parole hearing in 2022. “I took it at face value.”

She was released just days after California Governor Gavin Newsom declared he would not urge the state Supreme Court to prevent her from being released on parole after her last five parole appeals were denied.

One of the most horrifying cases in recent history is the Charles Manson case. Many individuals will have conflicting emotions as a result of his accomplice being granted bail.
